Hiya to whoever is reading this,
I’m taking part in a rowing competition tomorrow, and as it say first one, I’m kinda terrified!!! I’ve been to other competitions for other sports before so i thought i’d share some of my top tips for what to bring with you and how to balance the stress with lots of fun (or is it just me who gets stressed over stuff like this?)!
1) Pack the night before!
I always have to either just lay my stuff out or pack it the night/day before the competition as it means i have time to wash stuff if it hasn’t been done already, and it also means i’m less likely to forget anything! I also like doing it as it annoys my dad when i spread all the stuff i need out over the lounge floor! HIs face is hilarious! =)
2) Food
A lot of people go straight for the junk food when it comes to competitions but just eating empty calories isn’t gonna help you keep your energy levels up and perform to your best ability. Especially if you’re like me and avoiding excessive sugar, then making your own food instead of buying it from the store is your best bet. For my competition tomorrow, I’m taking frikadellen (healthy german burgers, cooked in olive oil), a quinoa “salad” (basically quinoa with fresh mint, herbs, toasted nuts and dried fruits) it tastes awesome and is super healthy! A little pot of chopped up veggies also are good to have on hand for a quick top-up! If you don’t have much time to eat, then a smoothie will be good, but remember to add some blended oats to give you some fibre and more energy!

3)ย Drinks
Water is key when doing sport, otherwise you just sweat yourself silly and then become dehydrated, not fun! I personally like to chop some fresh lemon pieces into my water bottle, shake and leave in the fridge overnight for it to infuse! Lime or cucumber also taste awesome and it is a much healthier alternative to Lucozade or other sugar filled sports drinks.
4) Stuff to do
If you are going to a tournament or big competition like me, then you’re likely to be doing a lot of waiting around for hours between your races! I suggest bringing and iPod or your phone for music and a kindle or iPad/tablet to read books or watch a film. These are also good for the coach as well if like me you have a long coach journey! DON’T FORGET YOUR CHARGER though because its so annoying when your device dies and you spend the journey back banging your head on the window in bored desperation!
5) Useful stuff to bring
If you’re a girl then definitely bring girly stuff, just in case because it is unbelievably horrible when you get caught out at a competition! I wouldn’t suggest wearing make-up unless it’s water/sweat proof because otherwise your Picasso standard masterpiece will all just slip southwards! Eeeew! mascara dribbles = not good! I always bring plasters and some form of hand cream as if like me you’re playing a sport where your hand can get a bit bashed up, it will be a life-saver! (i just noticed, i use a lot of exclamation marks!!!!!!!!)! A good lip balm, concealer + brush, hairbrush + bands/clips are also kinda vital but it could depend on space in your bag. ย IF YOU WILL GET SWEATY/B.O. THEN PLEASE FOR EVERYONE’S SAKE BRING DEODORANT!!!!!!! If you are rowing like me or are playing a sport where you use any special extra equipment then remember to bring these and leave them in a place where you will see them and won’t forget them! For tomorrow i need my rowing gloves but if you are playing hockey, don’t forget your stick, gum shield or shin pads, etc.

Hey that’s awesome! There was only one time when I’ve done any sort of rowing, I kept falling in the water and smashing into rocks. It’s a real skill!

I do indoor rowing and water rowing, the competition is indoor which is hard as you are on your own!!!

Haha thx! I’m not, I just did ballet from the age of 4 so I have kinda strong legs, which is good for rowing! Yeah, it can be pretty painful when you don’t stretch out your legs before! ๐

Oh that’s cool! You must be pretty good at ballet then, you still do it now? I know right, your body gets used to the stiffness in your legs after a while! What’s your competition today?

It’s an indoor rowing one, yeah I still do ballet, I’m grade 6.
My legs never really get too stiff though as I have to stretch a lot! ๐
